Revealing scenes of San Francisco past and present, the bronze reliefs were cast from bakers' clay, and modeled by the artist's family members, neighbors and local schoolchildren. Sculptor Ruth Asawa's 1972 fountain, located just outside the hotel on the plaza, depicts inner-city life.
