Daily tours provide a fascinating glimpse into early Christian history. After the contents were re-interred in the city's churches in the ninth century, the catacombs were forgotten for an entire millennium.  Between the second and fifth centuries, hundreds of thousands of Christians were buried in multi-level catacombs outside the gates of Rome.
